What was your favorite book (or books) for 2014? What reading really caught your attention? Sparked your interest? Changed your world? Made you laugh?

Many thanks to Booking Through Thursday.

Okay, so technically it’s Friday here, but it’s still Thursday somewhere so I’d say this counts. My favourite books for 2014 were definitely a mixed bunch, spanning the genres among other things.

My absolute favourite, without any attention to objective quality or the opinions of others, was Oryx and Crake.  A beautifully written, entirely compelling science fiction (or is it?) novel, with the main character’s story being only part of what makes this one of the best books I have ever read.  However, two other novels I read almost eclipsed this: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay and If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler.  All three of these are somewhat “literary” in their aspirations but combine this with a wonderful heart and wonderful sense of plot, for whatever that means.

All highly recommended to readers of all persuasions.
